Dave Asprey's revolutionary approach to anti-aging is based on science-backed methods designed to upgrade human biology and redefine the limits of the mind, body, and spirit.
The Bottom Line
Anti-aging may be a marketing buzzword, but Asprey breaks it down into specific, concrete steps to extend your life and boost your energy and productivity.
Author and entrepreneur Dave Asprey hopes to live for 180 years in near-perfect health — and believes the secret for doing so lies in “biohacking,” or using science and experimentation to “upgrade your body, your mind and your life.” So far, he’s spent some $1 million pursuing treatments and techniques to extend his life and reverse aging. These treatments include paying a surgeon to harvest and inject his own stem cells into his joints, scalp, face and genitals every six months; bathing in an infrared sauna; taking 100 supplements each day; and using a hyperbaric oxygen chamber.
Despite these more extreme approaches, food and nutrition are at the heart of Asprey’s anti-aging regimen (he founded the lifestyle company [Bulletproof ](https://www.bulletproof.com/)in 2013 to sell his own nutrition and wellness products), and he follows the strict low-carb, high-fat diet outlined his 2014 New York Times bestseller, The Bulletproof Diet.
Asprey has no medical training, and his diet and lifestyle advice have received considerable blowback from science experts and journalists. Critics assert that Asprey cherry-picks the data he cites as evidence, that he fails to convey the unreliability of studies conducted on animals or on very small or specific groups of people, and that some data points are grossly outdated or were never evaluated through the peer-review process.
His new book, Super Human, also landed on the New York Times bestseller list. In it, Asprey recounts how an unhealthy early adulthood caused him to embark “on what has since become a lifelong journey to find innovative, science-backed methods to upgrade human biology and redefine the limits of the mind, body and spirit.” The book explores “Dave’s Seven Pillars of Aging,” or what he thinks contributes most to degeneration and disease. It also details Asprey’s many biohacks — some simple and free, others high-tech and expensive — which he says can “supercharge your body’s ability to heal and rejuvenate.”
