Leadership isn’t about power. It’s a set of teachable skills that combine grit and empathy, and having the courage to model openness and vulnerability.

The Bottom Line

Leadership isn’t about power. It’s a set of teachable skills that combine grit and empathy, and having the courage to model openness and vulnerability.

I. Introduction

Four-time best-selling author Brené Brown is something of a TED Talk rock star. She’s also a research professor who has spent decades studying leadership, human connection, shame, vulnerability, and empathy. Her fans include Oprah, Melinda Gates and a swath of Hollywood stars, and when her 2010 TED talk, “The Power of Vulnerability,” went viral, CEOs, nonprofit leaders, and even the military clamored for her to consult with their companies.

As she worked with organizations across the globe, ranging from entrepreneurial startups and family-run businesses to nonprofits, civic organizations and Fortune 50 companies, she was repeatedly asked the same question: How do you cultivate braver, more daring leaders, and how do you embed the value of courage in your culture?

Dare to Lead is her answer to these and other questions that get at the heart of what it means to be a daring leader. “One of the most important findings of my career is that daring leadership is a collection of four skill sets that are 100 percent teachable, observable, and measurable. It’s learning and unlearning that requires brave work, tough conversations, and showing up with your whole heart. Easy? No. Because choosing courage over comfort is not always our default. Worth it? Always. We want to be brave with our lives and our work. It’s why we’re here.”
